Obituary for Richard Catapano

– Richard Catapano, 73 passed away peacefully on February 8 at Good Samaritan Hospital, West Islip NY.
Richard was born in Williamsburg, Brooklyn on March 14, 1947. Loving son of Jennie Catapano, he grew up with his brothers, Phil, James, and Anthony.
He was a retired mechanic with St. Joseph’s hospital. He had a natural ability to build and was skillful at repairing anything. This led to a 30-year career in the engineering Dept at St. Joseph’s. Richard took pride in mentoring younger colleagues always teaching them “to do the right thing”. He often reminisced about the friendships he developed during his time there.
He was fond of the outdoors and enjoyed camping trips with his children. He loved to travel with his wife Rita. Montauk was a special place that was very dear to his heart. Richard was inspired by the lore of the American Wild West with its pioneer spirit and Native American Tribes. He also had a passion for collecting rare coins.
Described as a people person who loved his grandchildren, he had a gentle demeanor. He was always giving and devoted to his family. He especially loved spending time with his grandchildren who he adored.
He was drafted into the U.S. Army and served from Dec 1967- Nov 1969. Richard spent 1 year in Vietnam as a soldier and trained as a sniper.
He received the Bronze Star Medal for Meritorious Achievement in ground operations against hostile forces in July 1969.
He is survived by his wife, Rita of 39 years, his children Audra and Jason, stepsons Matthew and Paul, their spouses and 9 beautiful grandchildren.
