New Year's Day Greetings

The phone would ring every year right after midnight on New Year's Day and it would be the powerful, jovial voice of Onkel Joe wishing all a Happy New Year!!!! You could feel his energy and strength through the phone.  This tradition started by a Gottscheer susperstition that a male needed to call the household first in the New Year to bring luck all year long.  For as long as I can remember Onkel Joe would call, my parents would tell me that they received the call when I no longer lived at home.  This tradition always brought so much comfort, knowing wherever we were, there was always a strong connection.

Sadly, this New Year will be different. I know I will expect the phone to ring but instead we will pause and remember the great man that Onkel Joe was, toast him for the kindness and love he shared with us and appreciate the time we had together.

GOTTS NOM
